HARTO THE BORGES

THE OTHER SIDE OF JORGE LUIS BORGES

Harto the Borges is an unflinching and provocative portrait of Jorge Luis Borges, one of the most revered literary figures of the 20th century. Rather than approaching Borges with hagiographic reverence or reductive criticism, the film engages with the contradictions, vanities, and ironies that defined the Argentine writer in both life and legacy. Drawing on rare archival footage and a chorus of sharply opinionated intellectuals, Montes-Bradley constructs a layered narrative in which Borges is both subject and foil—constantly interrogated but never pinned down.

The title plays on Borges’s own paradoxical poem “Borges and I,” suggesting an author both haunted and magnified by his public persona. Originally released in Buenos Aires in 2000 to critical acclaim, Harto the Borges has since been screened widely at international festivals and academic institutions, including the University of Salamanca and the Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano in Havana. The film’s restless camera, irreverent tone, and critical edge reveal a Borges not preserved in amber, but still capable of igniting debate. On the tenth anniversary of its release, Montes-Bradley reflected on the film’s enduring relevance in Diario Clarín. Harto the Borges continues to challenge the mythology that surrounds its subject and invites viewers to reconsider Borges in light of the tensions he himself cultivated.
